The Keepers

Warriors blogger Adam Lauridsen has a nice post today about the Warriors’ players who are the future of the franchise.

Monta Ellis - During the middle third of the season, when the Warriors often struggled against average to poor teams, Ellis was the player most often arriving with clutch shooting or spectacular drives to bail out the team. He grew during this stretch from just one of the Warriors’ options into their go-to scorer when points became hard to find. His mid-range jump shot has become a thing of beauty, the death-defying thrill of his drives still hasn’t worn off, and he played for most of the season with a good sense of his strengths and weaknesses. Davis, Jackson, Harrington, and Biedrins all stumbled at points this year. Monta never let up.

Phoenix - The Golden State Warriors finally ran out of gas, losing to the Phoenix Suns, 122-116.  The defeat eliminated the Warriors from the Western Conference playoff race with one game left to play.  Monta Ellis did not shoot the ball well (8-20 fg), but he did manage to stuff the stat-sheet with 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 steals.  Over his last 6 games, Monta is averaging 3.7 steals per game.

Golden State Warriors' Monta Ellis, #8, goes up for the lay up against the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2nd quarter of their game on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif.

Oakland - The Golden State Warriors kept their thin playoff hopes alive, by beating the Los Angeles Clippers, 122-116.  Coupled with Denver’s loss to the Utah Jazz, the Warriors moved effectively 1 game back of the Nuggets in the playoff race.  Monta showed more of a playmaker role in the game with 7 assists and only 1 turnover. He also added 17 points and 2 steals on 6-12 shooting.

Monta and Warriors on the brink

Golden State's Monta Ellis lands on fans in the front row while chasing a loose ball during the second half of an NBA basketball game against the Denver Nuggets on Thursday in Oakland. Denver won 114-105 to take a commanding lead in the race for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Oakland - They came out strong, but in the end, the Golden State Warriors fell to the Denver Nuggets, 114-105.  The loss essentially put the Warriors 2 games behind the Nuggets in the Western Conference playoff race with 3 games to play.  Monta on the surface, had a nice stat line, with 29 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals.  Unfortunately, he was an awful 3-7 from the line and had six crucial turnovers.
